Technically, Anthropic mitigates this by running Cowork inside a virtual machine. The new Windows version adds further constraints: user reports indicate that Cowork’s file access is limited to the personal user folder, preventing access to system-level or common development directories such as C:\git.

Free-tier users do not have access. This pricing structure positions Cowork as a premium productivity and automation layer rather than a universal feature of the Claude ecosystem.
Anthropic followed a similar pattern with the macOS debut, initially limiting access to Max subscribers before broadening availability to additional paid tiers.
